In early 2025, we came across something extraordinary: vintage Chiyogami paper, tucked away in a small Japanese shop in Coupeville, WA. Among the treasures we brought home were just four sheets of vintage Katazome-shi paper — and once they're gone, this paper will never exist again.
Katazome is an art form originally developed for dyeing silk destined for kimono. Kata means "stencil," and zome — from someru — means "to dye." Every part of the process, from crafting the tools to hand-printing each design, demands extraordinary skill and patience. It's a direct, deceptively simple technique that produces astonishingly elegant results.
